Ubuntu Ground Cafe was established as a social enterprise by the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust. It also acts as a training initiative for those wanting to work in the hospitality industry. As a coffee destination it was, for me, a really unexpected, but oh so welcome, surprise.
It has a cosy yet rustic charm with its outside seating and cheerful deco. There are quirky pieces of furniture mixed with lots of cushions that invite customers to sit and chat for a while. Best of all, they serve a really wonderful cup of coffee with a smile.
It overlooks a modest plant nursery, bookstore (where you can buy cheap CDs, too), art and craft retail outlet and two shops selling second-hand goods. It’s a real treat to visit and proceeds from sales go to helping HIV and Aids patents and their families. So all for a good cause.
There is free Wi-Fi, ample and secure parking, it is pet friendly, cosy, rustic and laidback.
Food- wise, they offer all day breakfasts, toasted sandwiches, burgers, wraps, salads and really scrumptious looking freshly baked cakes and scones. This is certainly a gem in the middle of Hillcrest.
