As we gear up for this year’s Battle of the Beans, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the independent coffee shops, baristas and coffee lovers who make KwaZulu‑Natal’s coffee culture so vibrant. For many of us, our favourite coffee shop is more than a place to grab a cappuccino. It’s a workspace, a creative hub, a meeting spot and sometimes the only place where the Wi‑Fi behaves.
Coffee shops give us great coffee, warm atmosphere and a sense of community. But as more people settle in with laptops and lattes, it helps to remember that these spaces are still businesses and the heart of our local coffee ecosystem.
A little etiquette keeps the vibe friendly and supports the very coffee shop we’re celebrating in Battle of the Beans.
Buy More Than One Coffee
If you’re planning to spend a few hours working, ordering just one flat white and settling in for the morning isn’t ideal. Grab a second drink or treat yourself to a pastry. It supports the shop and who knows, you might discover a bean that ends up in next year’s competition.

Coffee shops have peak periods, especially during breakfast, lunch and weekend mornings. If the place fills up, check whether you’re occupying more space than you need. A solo laptop at a four‑seater during the morning rush can cause frustration for staff and customers.
