The Coffee Collaboration – otherwise known as the Coffee Colab – comprises a group of experienced media and coffee industry professionals who have teamed up to offer their skills for the promotion of their favourite brew – coffee. In awe of the professionals who put a spring in our steps by providing our daily caffeine fix and aware of the many small businesses that do not have the resources or expertise to promote their coffee establishments, we decided to help them by encouraging them to do what they do best – serve up a superb cup of coffee.
It was over 20 years ago that Ingrid Shevlin, then co-ordinator of the lifestyle supplement at a major Sunday newspaper, found herself chatting to Ralph Bronzin, the then proprietor of the KZNSA’s Arts Café, about the art of making coffee and the perfect cappuccino. The Great Cappuccino Hunt was born from this, a competition to find the best – and reward – coffee shops in the Greater Durban area, North Coast, South Coast, Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands. It not only raised awareness and boosted standards, but it also acknowledged the role and skills of the barista.

Much anticipated event
This competition became a much-anticipated annual event boasting a healthy spirit of competition. Commendations and awards were so valued that many graced the walls of our coffee shops for years. Unfortunately, this was eventually discontinued.

It's back!
Now, Ingrid – and this competition - are back in a slightly different form with the backing of our favourite sugar brand, Selati.
