Cafe Jiran was once a top contender in coffee competitions decades or so ago. This used to be a bustling venue with knowledgeable friendly staff and a superior brew that coffee lovers made a special visit to enjoy. Alas this is but a memory, but I am writing this because Jiran NEEDS to pull up its socks up if they want to be a serious contender in the game.
I went three times to convince myself that the winning formula I knew of old is still there, just deeply buried in a laissez-faire non- engaging team. Some training is needed at all levels.
All is not lost, though, as Cafe Jiran is across the road, literally, from the beach and enjoys plenty of street patronage, even if they no longer get the Bel-Aires Suites Hotel breakfast traffic. They are perfectly positioned if you want to stop and have a nibble and natter on the promenade.
It is unfortunate that my coffee, while good, took a long time to get to me and paying for my coffee took even longer. My waitress disappeared into the nether regions of the shop and I thought she had had a Jonah experience. It took so long for her to bring my change I was fully expecting her to be spat out en deshabille.
