I was served by owner Vanessa Singh as the barista was not at work. Vanessa did a good job and is always extremely friendly. No micro textured milk in the cappuccino and no latte art, but it was made and served with heart. This was also the first coffee shop I reviewed where the ratio of milk to the espresso was spot on, i.e. not overly milky. However the medium roast (House of Coffees) should have had a more upfront flavour. Perhaps a little under extracted?
There is free Wi-Fi as well as a collection of books to read and buy from classics and biographies to recipe books. I bought the latest “JAN” recipe book (award-winning chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen)
Gaming is also a feature here with FuBball outside and retro gaming machines inside, including VR gaming and a large gaming LED screen. The gaming section is screened off from the seating area which includes the book section.
Food includes toasted sandwiches, cookies and crunchies. All kinds of coffees and teas are served. One is collagen coffee. (Collagen coffee is a great way to get a boost of protein and fat to fuel your body for the day ahead. It is also known to have gut health benefits)
The coffee could be better extracted and the micro-texturing on the milk of the cappuccino could be improved. But this is a true coffee shop. Sit down, read a book and stay as long as you like. You can also play a computer game, eat a snack and meet up with locals.
One negative is that the location is at the back of the Umdloti Beach Centre .
