Stepping into this charming cafe located in the grounds of the Palm Kloof Equestrian Estate with its exceptional view overlooking the paddocks to the ocean beyond was an ‘aaah’ moment.

The light and airy converted  ‘stable’ perched on a hill above the equestrian centre features slide-open windows ensuring patrons can spot whales (during whale season) and waves from their tables.

But the best sight of all though is of the horses frolicking in the paddocks below.

The rustic decor boasts unusual pieces such as a flower covered swing, red stable doors, which line one of the walls, and huge comfy couches. A pretty, little shop selling unusual goodies is tucked at the back of the cafe.

Stables is a perfect spot for the coffee and cake brigade to indulge. Huge glass domes offer an array of cakes (my slice of Mozart was off the charts awesome), scones, muffins and pastries. I loved the horse-shaped, artistically iced biscuits wrapped in cellophane that are on sale.

The breakfast and brunch bunch are well-catered for and the lunch menu is inviting.

The cafe is fast becoming the go-to place for a traditional Sunday lunch.

Proprietor, Kirsty Orsmond, once owned Port Shepstone’s trendiest boutique. She knows how to put those finishing touches to everything. So if you are having a private function there – she sure can ‘dress’ a table.

And the cafe’s barista knows how to make a really good, smooth and silky cappuccino complete with tiger-striped crema. The espresso too was a well- extracted brew. No burnt or sour after taste. Both were served in proper-sized cups (with biscotti on the side) and at the perfect temperature.

Friendly staff add to a pleasant outing at Stables Cafe. There is plenty of parking.   Wi-Fi is  available.
