Tucked away in a leafy suburb, Gatvol is a hidden gem for those seeking great coffee, delicious food and a peaceful retreat. Surrounded by a lush tropical-like jungle, complete with a gentle stream, the setting offers a unique sense of privacy and tranquillity. While there are no sea views or sweeping vistas, the natural beauty and secluded atmosphere make this café a standout destination.

The café shares its property with a boutique hotel, adding a mix of guests and locals to its charm. However, the logistics of coffee and food orders can be slightly confusing. Coffee must be ordered and paid for separately at the coffee bar, while food orders are handled by waitstaff from the restaurant. While this territorial system can be a minor inconvenience, the baristas are attentive and bring your coffee to your table once it’s ready – a thoughtful touch.

The menu is extensive, with the kitchen consistently delivering high-quality meals. It’s no surprise Gatvol is a favourite breakfast spot for Durban North locals.

The cappuccinos we ordered were delightful, with full froth and well-blended shots of coffee, offering a fragrant and smooth drinking experience with just a hint of acidity. The espressos were equally impressive, served at the perfect temperature with a balanced crema that spoke to the freshness and quality of the beans.

If you’re looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle, Gatvol Coffee Shop is a must-visit for its serene setting, excellent coffee, and satisfying food. Just remember to order your coffee separately to ensure a seamless experience.    Wi-Fi is available.
