What do you get when a die-hard biker opens a bike repair shop with a 15-year track record but wants to make a difference and offer his customers something special? You get Mallaz Coffee Shop in the CBD. It has been my lament while judging that there simply are no decent coffee shops left in the city centre to visit, especially when one needs to meet someone for business.
If you get used to the very industrial look and feel, which has its own charm, then Mallaz is a unique and compelling option in the CBD. Gary and Bernie are a couple who not only run the show, but also live upstairs on the premises. This is part of Gary’s commitment to making the CBD great again and the couple are walking the talk by bringing their little family into town to live. Many wouldn’t.
A mechanic by trade, Gary hosts a series of experiences and immersions aimed at promoting family unity. He does ‘Dads ‘n Lads’ days where the guests can be part of motor engine assembly (using 3D printed “parts”) or take tours in his HUGE American van. Lectures, training and other events are all held on site.
While Gary is a bike enthusiast, the spot is not only for bike lovers.
The food offering at Mallaz is limited to sandwiches baked goods and light meals, served with a Coffee Merchant blend brew that is well balanced and tasty – a lot must be said in favour of their latte art and one only needs to visit their Instagram account @mallazcustoms to get an idea of how detailed they can be.
Both Bernie and Gary are devout Christians who are looking to put some goodness back into the world. My visit to their establishment was both enlightening and inspiring
